Check your Hole Golf Day 2012

Keen golfers from all across the Mackay region turned out for the CQ Health Assess Check Your Hole Men’s Health Charity Golf Day at the Pioneer Valley Golf Club in Mirani on Sunday August 12th.

Now in its’ third year the Charity Golf Day promotes men’s health issues in our local community. Each year CQ Health Assess donate all funds from the day to men’s health initiatives, this year they have included the Mater Foundation Prostate Cancer Research Institute as one of their worthy beneficiaries. CQ Health Assess Co-ordinator Nicole Armitage described the event as a golf day “with a difference”.

“It is an interactive golf day with health screenings at various holes around the course, including Blood Pressure checks, Diabetes screening and waist measurements. We also hand out information and chat to the players about all manner of men’s health issues, from Prostate Cancer to mental illness and chronic disease risk factors.”

Ms Armitage said CQ Health Assess used the Charity Golf Day to focus on Men’s Health as they tended to be less proactive compared to women. “The men were quite surprised to hear that 99 per cent of working age Australians have one chronic disease risk factor and that 64 per cent have three. Chronic diseases are preventable and early intervention is the best cure but generally men are more reluctant to visit their GP for a check-up especially when it comes to preventative medicine and early intervention.”

Despite the serious message the emphasis during the event is on fun with teams taking part in challenges such as the ‘Wobbly Club’ and ‘Ball in the Hoop’ while vying for a prize such as ‘Best Dressed Team’, ‘Prettiest in Pink’, ‘Best Male Specimen’ and ‘Grumpiest Golfer’ – to name a few. Extra money was raised on the day through raffles and with players being fined for swearing or throwing tantrums. Profits from the BBQ lunch supplied by Mirani Lions Club were also generously donated back to the cause.

First place this year went to team ‘Coast to Coal’ from Haymans Electrical, runners up were ‘Woody’s Crushers’ from Sibelco and the Don Bradman award (last place) went to Team Tuff from CQ Nurse.

The CQ Health Assess Charity Golf Day would not be possible with the support of major sponsors; BB Print, D&T Hydraulics and Engineering, Emeco, Arching Hot Welding and DGL Accountants along with the fantastic prizes donated by local businesses.

Ms Armitage said the day was a great success. “We had picture perfect weather and excellent feedback from players who are all set for next year’s event.” The CQ Health Assess ‘Check your Hole' Charity Golf Day is an annual event held the 2nd Sunday in August each year.
